Well it might not be the 1st iteration of the Lonesome River Band but this is that original classic band that redefined progressive bluegrass in the early 90′s. I’m surprised there isn’t more on YouTube available of this era of the LRB but for now, this is all we have.
Quick story: When the DTB played locally at The Ark in 2009, my seat was directly behind the sound booth where Tim Austin was sittng. I was able to talk with Tim Austin for about 5 minutes before the show and asked him about these videos that I’m posting about here. He said they were shot at a show they did at a school in his town. He had been sitting on these because they were supposed to be released as a DVD at some point but that never panned out. So he put them up on YouTube.
All videos can be viewed through the following link:

This guy can lay it down. He plays just about all the breaks on “Smashville”, from Sierra Hull’s new CD. He plays Jimmy VanCleeve’s fiddle break, Clay Hess’ guitar break, and Ron Block’s banjo break from the CD. Just watch.
They didn’t get voted the 2010 Instrumental Group of the Year for nuthin’. Mainly, check out “The Old Brown County Barn”, which starts at around 2:45. Both of Jesse’s banjo breaks are killer. These guys are in the pocket.
Pretty tight stuff they did back in the day. Their version of “Will You Be Loving Another Man”.
What is the worst thing that could possibly happen to a band during a live performance infront of hundreds of people? Can you guess what it is?…You got it! The power goes out!
Here we find Rhonda, who some consider the Queen of Bluegrass, taking matters in to her own hands at the merchandise table. But, have no fear, The Rage sure know how to put on a show when Rhonda ain’t around…
Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms
Enjoy!
Never heard “You Don’t Know My Mind” in the key of B, but they sure do mash it.
